Enrollment ongoing in multiple languages. Results: 56 participants enrolled from 12 countries (2-78 years, median: 12.5, IQR: 20.5, 31 survivors). A 27-year-old previously healthy woman was admitted to the hospital with recurrent seizures. Status epilepticus developed that became refractory to third-line therapy with propofol and barbiturates. The patient had a very extensive diagnostic workup including autoimmune, viral and genetic investigations. A tentative immune therapy was proposed with high doses of steroids and plasma exchanges. Refractory status epilepticus.

The important risk factor predisposing patients with SE to RSE is delay in receiving treatment. Self-sustaining SE is associated with progressive, time-dependent development of pharmacoresistance. Early termination of convulsive SE by aggressive treatment is the best way to prevent RSE. RS...
